Amateur Radio is having a growth spurt! That’s right, and it’s coming from young people. In this first video episode of “What Hams Do” we hear from 3 young people, ranging in age from 11 to 18, who talk about their ham radio journey. Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) seem to be a common theme among all these extraordinary young folks, but they do have other interests as well. Once is a dancer and another is involved in scouting.
SCOUTING AND HAM RADIO
The 11 year old scout in our story recently obtained her Amateur Radio Technicians License. A family interview reveals their ham radio plans for themselves and the scout troop they run, and how Amateur Radio ties in with school studies even when school is at home on a computer screen.
HIGH ALTITUDE BALLOONING AND HAM RADIO
One 12-year-old’s fascination with High Altitude Balloons is another focus of the program. His ham radio equipped balloon soared to 30,000 feet sending back tracking data all could follow. And one college Freshman ham radio operator recounts her citizen scientist experiment with the earth’s magnetic field.
But wait, there’s more…
